Pitru Dosha: Remedies and Rituals for Family Growth and Prosperity:

What is Pitru Paksha?

Pitru Paksha is a special time according to the Hindu calendar when we honor our ancestors. It starts from the full moon day in the month of Bhadrapada and ends on the new moon day in the month of Ashwin. This year, Pitru Paksha will begin on September 17, 2024, and end on October 2, 2024. It lasts for about 16 days, though it can be a little shorter or longer depending on the lunar calendar.

Who are the Pitras (Ancestors)?

Pitras are our ancestors who have passed away. This includes:

  • Parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, both maternal and paternal great-grandparents, uncles, aunts, siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition, anyone from your family line up to the seventh generation who is no longer alive is

considered a Pitra.

Benefits of Performing Pitru Tarpan

Doing Pitru Tarpan (ritual offerings to ancestors) and Shraddh (ancestor rites) has several benefits:

1. Ancestors’ Blessings: Performing these rituals is believed to satisfy the ancestors, who then

bless their descendants with prosperity, family growth, wealth, and abundance.

2. Relief from Debt: Regular Tarpan and Shraddh can help alleviate life’s problems and provide

relief from debt.

3. Increased Wealth: These rituals can bring more wealth and prosperity to your household.

How to Perform Pitru Tarpan Yourself

If you can’t perform Tarpan by a river or pond, or with a Brahmin priest, you can do it at home:

1. Use Water: Fill a copper, brass, or bronze vessel with water. Offer Tarpan by chanting the

names and lineage (Gotra) with the appropriate mantras.

2. Materials: Use Kusha grass, barley, sesame seeds, sandalwood, white flowers, fragrance, and

rice grains.

3. Meaning: Kusha grass should be used in the offerings made to deities, sages, and ancestors.

o Rice Grains: Please the deities.

o Barley: Please the sages (Rishis).

o Sesame Seeds: Please Yama (the god of death) and the ancestors.

dogs.
