Fifth Day of Navratri: Worship of Devi Skandamata and Its Astrological Significance :

On the fifth day of Navratri, devotees worship Devi Skandamata, the fifth form of Goddess Durga. The worship of Devi Skandamata is dedicated to this divine and serene form of the Goddess. This day holds special significance, and understanding the mythology, worship procedure, and astrological importance of Devi Skandamata can enhance the spiritual experience. Let’s explore these aspects in detail.

Divine Form of Devi Skandamata

Devi Skandamata is depicted with four arms. In two of her hands, she holds a lotus and a white flower, which is why she is also known as Padmasana. She is seen riding a lion and holding her son, Skanda (Kartikeya), in her lap. Her form provides a tranquil and divine experience for devotees and symbolizes prosperity and well-being.

Mythological Story

According to Hindu mythology, a demon named Tarakasura performed severe penance to please Lord Brahma and sought a boon of immortality. Brahma replied that everything born must eventually die and that immortality was not possible. However, he granted Tarakasura the boon that he could only be defeated by the son of Lord Shiva.

Tarakasura assumed that since Lord Shiva would never marry, he would not have a son. Consequently, he wreaked havoc across the universe. The gods appealed to Lord Shiva for help. To address this, Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati, and their son, Skanda (Kartikeya), was born. Devi Skandamata, in her form as Skanda’s mother, trained him in warfare. Eventually, Skanda defeated Tarakasura, ending his reign of terror.
