Tarakasura assumed that since Lord Shiva would never marry, he would not have a son. Consequently, he wreaked havoc across the universe. The gods appealed to Lord Shiva for help. To address this, Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati, and their son, Skanda (Kartikeya), was born. Devi Skandamata, in her form as Skanda’s mother, trained him in warfare. Eventually, Skanda defeated Tarakasura, ending his reign of terror.
